MY HERO

On 26th of August 2026, the world got notified of Peter Cullen’s demise. The entire world mourned and was in grieving, including myself. Something broke inside me. Something that can never be whole again. Something that you could try to rebuild and fill up with other things, but it will never be the same ever again. Yesterday night, I lost someone that defined my entire childhood, my teenage and my adulthood. I lost someone who I made emotional connection with, someone who instilled the good values of life and taught me so much. I lost my hero.

I must have been barely 3 years old, when I heard Optimus Prime on the television screen. Most children would be mesmerised by the bright colours and the explosive action of the cartoon series, but what charmed me was the voice. “I am Optimus Prime, and I come from the planet Cybertron”; those words echoed in my ears far longer than the show, for days. I tried to recreate it, but, as a 3 year old child, could only blabber some of the words of a foreign language not yet understood. I begged my mother to tune into the channel where transformers aired, only to hear the words of wisdom from a red and blue truck. I am sure many did. After all, it is one of the most iconic and legendary voices ever.

Over the years, the voice kept changing, the character kept evolving, and yet, that simple yet heavy, the deep yet gentle, the loud yet soft voice of Peter Cullen stayed in my memory. Garry Chalk, David Kaye and Chris Hemsworth and many others did a splendid job voicing Optimus Prime, but to me, there was only one voice synonymous to Optimus, it was Peter Cullen. His comeback in 2007 for the movies gave me immense joy, hearing a familiar noble voice booming through the speakers of the theatre hall. The goosebumps I felt every time he spoke, every dialogue filled with wisdom and gravity. As the movies progressed, the quality of the voice remained, yet the dialogues became far worse than before. Optimus began to speak crudely and the occasional “I’ll kill you” sounded so off putting it made me want to stop watching transformers movies altogether. His comeback was not only for the movies though, he came back to voice Optimus Prime in the show, Transformers Prime.

Transformers Prime for me was the defining Optimus, and in my opinion, the best delivery Peter Cullen has ever made. You could not separate the voice and the character; it was as if they were one being. The series solidified the perfect Optimus Prime with the perfect voice actor. It felt as if Peter’s own ideology and traits were transferred to Optimus Prime. Peter Cullen and his interviews were amazing to watch as well. He would get the same questions asked in most interviews, but he did not falter to repeat the same story again and again. He was grateful, humble, and one of the nicest persons I saw on camera.

People say “never meet your heroes”, well if I had the chance to meet Peter Cullen or Optimus prime, it would be the same thing. Both were one and the same. They were truly inspirational and mesmerizing, instilling the values of humility, virtue, kind-heartedness, forgiveness and resolve through decades of amazing and beautiful performances. Optimus Prime will never be the same again.

I look back at his performances, and it gives me goosebumps every time. It feels surreal that a person from the other end oof the world in a screen could make you feel emotional about metal robots that turn into vehicles, objects or other things. But that was his charm, turning cold steel into a warm lovable character through the power of voice. His voice acting will always be legendary, and he will always be the true Optimus Prime in my heart.

“My fellow Autobots, lament not that which is over, be happy that it happened” is what he would say. It is true. The world witnessed an amazing actor, an amazing, kind-hearted, generous, happy person perform for billions of fans worldwide for over 40 years of his life, delivering legendary performances that touched hearts and instilled good into the hearts of young and old, children and adults worldwide. His legacy, in my opinion, is an infinite room, which cannot be fulfilled by anyone else. Like Micheal Jackson and Stan Lee, he was an icon, a legend, a giant, dare I say, a god of his craft. There will be no one in coming generations that can even match the calibre of work he has put in.

People when asked with a choice, who would they follow into a march of no return, and when presented with options, would always go for Optimus Prime. That is the charisma he created in a lifeless character through his superior voice acting and his performance. The world will forever be grateful for his contributions, and I will never be complete again, for what has been lost is a once in generation artist. I am glad to be born in the era when he was alive, to witness the greatness of my favourite character, and to honour the legacy that he will leave behind. In my own life, I hope to be a fraction of the great man that he was… a kind, virtuous, humble and a good person.

“Be Strong Enough To Be Gentle…”

“Above all, do not grieve in my absence, for in my spark, I know, this is not the end…”
